The next section of my chosen reading consists of the Renaissance and Humanism in England. This section emphasized on the following: human relations to geography, the idea of humanism, the impact of renaissance writers, Christians humanist, Shakespeare, and the innovation of science and technology.
In this reading I focused on the following thinking and effective reading strategies: Infer, visualization, evaluation, and connection.
I used Infer strategy for the title of the first section which is called Human and Physical Geography. As I was reading the title I predicted that the section was going to elaborate on the correlation between humans and their physical geography (location). On page 118 the fourth paragraph was titled Shakespeare and the Elizabeth Age. I predicted that the section will discuss the age of Queen Elizabeth I of England. On last page of this section the title Printing press led me to predict that the section will discuss Gutenberg and the formation of the Printing Press.
The next strategy which I will focus on is visualization. On page 115 in the first paragraph they talk about cities where people exchange ideas. The word ideas made me think about New York City and how it is a big city were many people from different culture exchange ideas all the time.
On the first page the word humanism was used in bold letters which made me evaluate and to understand the meaning of the word and it’s relation to the text. It’s meaning from the text implies an intellectual movement. Under the subsection titled Christinan Humanism I evaluated the last two sentences, because they developed the meaning of the book Utopia by Thomas Moore.
The last strategy used was connection. This strategy I used frequently and I find it helpful to me in reading a Social Studies text. On page 115 I associated the Bubonic Plague with the H1N1. Leonardo Da Vinci was famous for his use of different perspectives in his paintings. On page 116 the fourth paragraph fifth line. The connection made here was the movie the Da Vinci code and how they used his pictures to solve riddles Lastly, Christen de Pizan was the first women to earn a living as a writer during the Renaissance I connected to her Alice Paul. Alice Paul was the one of the first women to push for the 19th amendment to be ratified.
