Analyzing Partner's Text Three

In the third text of the book it talks about Awtone's life in the foster were he is living at. The following strategies help me to understand the readings: prediction and visualization. Awtone describes how Mrs. Pinkett keeps the door to her room lock with a padlock. I began to visualize little boy standing in front of this door that seem to him to be the door of a scary giant. The door has cast of shadows for the dim lighting in the hallway. I predict that the Awtone is a very curious young man. On page 50 Mrs. Pinkett yells at Awtone to stay in his room and not leave because it is nap time. However once the house becomes quiet he creeps over to the door and takes a peak outside the hallway to make sure Mrs. Pickett went back downstairs. I am going to predict that his curiosity as he become a adult will be his ability to cope with life.

Analyzing Partner's Text Two

The next section of my reading discuses Awtone visit to the Social Services office. As I was reading the text I used the following reading strategies: analyze, visualize, and predict.
On page 40 I analyzed the author use of words such Ha Ya ll doing. It made me predict that they the characters in the book might be from the south. Awtone describes Mrs. Pinkett his foster mother on the way to the office dresses as church going lady. I could visualize her wearing a skirt suit in a dark color wearing a matching hat. From the way that Mrs. Pinkett yells at Awtone I predicted that their is probable tension between them. From the reading it seems as Awtone did not have the best childhood.

Response to Partner's Blog

I can truly appreciate Michele's blog this week. She definitely targeted the same reading strategies as I. For example she said the word nationalism made her think about the pledge of allegiance, I too thought of the pledge when I saw the word nationalism. One thing that I find interesting aside from the similarities between our reading strategies, was reading other's perspective from your content area. I find that it helped you look at the content from a different view. I am interested in reading Michele's next blog.

Analyzing Partner's Text One

I am now reading Finding Fish by Antwone Fisher. While reading the first section I used the following reading strategies: Visualization and Predictions.

On page 35, he describes himself sitting by the window daydreaming while the snow was falling. I picture a young boy staring outside the window watching the snow fall and seeing his breath fog the window from the cold against the window. He then describes the Pickett family as being mean. He imagine, them has having goat bodies with hooves, I could visualize a centaur.

I predict that Antwone lives in a foster home from the following quote, “It seems the time came for the visits to child welfare…” (pg. 36) Another prediction that I made was Miss Pickett’s disgust with Antwone by the tone she used with him.

I found that using these reading techniques for a novel is much easier than using it for a textbook because the author does a good job with the visual images and you can see when the author is placing emphasis on something that someone is saying.

After reading Michelle's blog last week I was hoping that Antwone was dreaming. However, after reading her entry for this week blog it was revealed that it was true and Antwone was not dreaming. I truly enjoyed Michelle's visualization it made me feel as if I was watching movie. I am looking forward to this reading selection.

Analytic Blog Three

The last section of my chosen text discussed the monumental Protest Reformation and Counter- Reformation, which took place in Europe, specifically England during the 1500’s.

For this blog I focused on the following reading strategies: Visualization, Predicting, Evaluating, Connection, and Recall.

On page 121, the word indulgence made me picture a priest clothed in his best regale sitting on a throne and a peasant with tattered clothing giving what little money he had begging for forgiveness.

When I was reading the about the public posting of the 95 thesis, I began to predict that this action was going to cause a conflict. Another prediction that I made was when I read the word reformation I believed that this would lead to some kind of reform or a multitude of reforms.

In the first paragraph, on page 121, specifically lines seven thru ten. I evaluated the corruption that was taking place within the Catholic Church during the 1500’s.

The word inquisition on page 124, help me to make a connection to a museum that I had been to. The museum had display’s of various torture instruments that were used during the inquisition to persuade the individual to confess. Another connection that I made was the subheading The Reformation of Parliament, which talks about how the king and parliament legalized laws. It made me think about our own government and how the senate and the president work together to legalize laws. It reinforces the idea that events of the past are not much different from today.

Comments on Partners Blog Two

After reading Michelle's blog I found that she went more in depth when using the reading strategies that we learned in class. I liked that she used very specific images for example that she was lucky to have a family, comparing her experince with the characters. It made me look at reading in a positive light. Instead of these characters being some distant person from a book; they now seem like someone I have seen before or even someone that I know. I enjoyed that way she ending her blog. i can't wait to see what happen next with Antwone.
